Timeless Boys Bedroom Makeover: Cozy, Classic, and So Him- Baseball Nod

There’s something really special about creating a space for a kid, especially when it’s for someone who feels like family. We recently gave Finn’s best friend, Beckett (9), a full bedroom makeover, and it was one of those projects that came together so naturally. I had a vision going in: make the room feel bigger, cozier, and more pulled together.

Beckett Bedroom Before

The first thing we tackled was the layout. Beckett has a great-sized room, so I knew we could make better use of the space.

We moved his bed out of the nook and placed it by the window instead. This simple change opened up the room so much and made everything feel lighter and more functional.

One of my favorite design decisions in this room was how we handled the shiplap wall. Instead of leaving it as an accent, we painted it the same deep blue found in the wallpaper. Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball. We also painted the trim and door the same color. This made everything feel cohesive, cozy, and intentional. Nothing stands out too much, and the whole room just wraps together in the best way.

From the beginning, I knew I wanted to use wallpaper to bring in some personality. We chose a dark blue plaid called Dutton Plaid (more options HERE) and it completely set the tone for the room. It feels classic, a little outdoorsy, and perfect for a growing boy. Something he won’t outgrow anytime soon.

Layering the Bedding

Beckett had room for a bigger bed so we sized up to a queen. He was so excited about having a real headboard, it’s funny the little things that make kids feel like their room is complete. This one has a woven texture, and the white really pops against the darker walls.

The bedding might be my favorite part, it’s where everything really came together. We started with cream and a navy plaid sheets. Then added a big, fluffy duvet (the extra fill makes all the difference!) inside a denim blue waffle duvet cover. At the foot of the bed, I added a striped linen layer that can double as a quilt for extra warmth. I love mixing patterns and tones, and this gave it that relaxed, layered look.

From there, we layered in cozy pillows and textures to make the bed feel inviting and fun. We carried the pattern into the shams (they’re reversible, which I always love), and used the softer cream stripe for the euro pillows (inserts) to keep things balanced. Beckett was immediately ready to jump in, which is always the goal!

Making the Windows Feel Bigger

We made a few simple changes to the windows that made a big impact. We removed the blinds (I love being able to see the full window when curtains are open), and since we used blackout curtains, we didn’t need them anyway. We also hung the curtain rod much higher than before, which instantly made the windows feel bigger and the ceilings taller. It’s one of my favorite easy tricks.

The Details That Made It His

Above the bed, we hung the most perfect piece of art for Beckett. I told my incredibly talented friend Lindsay that something sports-themed would be fun, he loves all sports, and she came back with the most amazing painting called Night Game. The colors are so good: deep greens with pops of blue and red that tie beautifully into the room. Beckett stood there studying it, noticing all the little details, his favorite being the tiny American flag.

On both sides of the artwork, we added a red wall sconce. I love having lighting by the bed without needing a lamp on the nightstand. There’s something about a soft glow on the bed at night that makes everything feel calm and cozy, perfect for snuggling up with a book.

On the nightstand, we kept things simple: a diffuser and a few decorative boxes to hold little treasures like his baseball card collection.

Right by the bedroom door, we added a large accordion hook rack, and it’s been such a practical addition. It gives Beckett an easy place to hang his hats, medals, and awards. Things he uses and loves, but that can quickly turn into clutter without a designated spot.

A Space to Display What He Loves

Across from the bed, we brought in a cabinet from my dining room (I had plans to replace it anyway), and it ended up being perfect in here. The size, the color, even the subtle stripes against the plaid wallpaper, it all worked so well. Styling this piece was one of the most fun parts.

On the bottom shelf, we added three baskets to keep things looking clean and organized. On the upper shelves, we layered artwork frames in the back (painted the same Hague Blue as the room) and filled them with photos of Beckett playing sports, surfing, and hanging out with friends.

It was the sweetest thing watching him look through those with his friends. You could tell how much he loved having such a personal space.

In front of the frames, we displayed his favorite things like awards, Legos, books, and little collections that make his room feel like his. Layered in some new things too, a cute green striped cup for pencils and this darling puppy dog shaped planter.

Making Every Inch Functional

We moved his dresser into the nook, and it fit perfectly. A fresh coat of that same Hague Blue paint made it feel completely new, like it was always meant to be there. On both sides of the dresser sits matching wood and rattan lamps.

Above it, we created a cork board wall using four square boards. This turned out to be such a fun and functional feature. We pinned photos and baseball cards. He can add little pieces of art or other accomplishments now that there is a dedicated spot. I love having a place for those things, it keeps them from becoming clutter and instead turns them into part of the room.

Above the boards, we hung a wooden bat that holds special meaning to him with these hooks.

A Spot to Hang Out

Beckett had a TV on his dresser for video games, so we wanted to make sure he still had a space to relax and hang out. We added two green swivel chairs I found on Facebook Marketplace, and they are perfect (similar here).

They can turn toward the TV for games or face the room for hanging out with friends. It made the room feel more like a place he can live in, not just sleep.

Grounding the Space with the Perfect Rug

With the walls going darker, I knew we needed something to help balance the room and keep it from feeling too heavy. I found the cutest hand-tufted wool gingham rug, and it did exactly that. The lighter tones help tie in the white ceiling and brighten everything up, while still playing into the mix of patterns throughout the room.

Lighting That Completes the Room

We also swapped out his overhead light, and it made such a difference. We chose a really fun, masculine mounted fixture with frosted globe shades, and it instantly elevated the space. It gives off the perfect soft light and works with a dimmer, which I always love for creating that cozy, relaxed feel in the evenings.

This room turned out exactly how I hoped. Cozy, classic, and full of personality. But more than anything, it feels like Beckett. Seeing how excited he was, how he noticed every detail, and how proud he felt to show it to his friends, that’s always the best part. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about making a room look good… it’s about creating a space where a kid feels at home.
