We painted our door a different version of the pink…a little richer, more of a salmon pink. I felt ready for a change, but we still love a pink door, it is fun to be “the house with the pink door”. Painting your front door is an easy update, it can be a fun seasonal change and decorating our front porch seasonally is probably one of my favorite things.
Why is decorating my porch my favorite thing? Thanks for asking! I got thinking about it after I spotted a 12′ skeleton at The Home Depot. At first I walked by it and thought, that is ridiculously large and crazy. Why would you put a huge skeleton in your yard?? Then I kept thinking about it as I shopped, I walked back to it like four times. I couldn’t get out of my head how fun it would be for our community! Parents taking their kids on walks and bike rides, just to see the huge skeleton in our yard. Kind-of a way to give back, free entertainment! To me, Halloween is a way to connect with our neighbors, what is better than that?
Sadly I did not get the skeleton, I just couldn’t think what to do with it after Halloween! But as we were decorating our porch today, we talked to SO many new people who were out walking to the beach or on a walk. They would stop and say they love the porch and take a picture. I love that it gave us a way to connect and put a smile on their face. Clean up your porch! If not for you, but for your community. I have six tips for decorating your porch for fall!
Six Fall Porch Decorating Tips-
First step for decorating your porch for fall- Clean your porch! Our porch was looking shabby at the end of summer. We power washed the front of the house and the steps (we use this power washer).
Second step for decorating your porch for fall- Paint or touch up! Make sure you like your front door color or to touch it up. Often a fun painted door is all you need! And maybe a plant, doormat and a pumpkin. We painted our front door in Sherwin Williams Salmon River Run, we had it matched at The Home Depot. We always go with Behr Marquee, it is an Exterior Semi-Gloss Enamel paint that is resistant to dirt and fading.
Third step for decorating your porch for fall- get a nice doormat. I LOVE this braided doormat so much. I typically layer a rug to make the rug feel substantial, but this one looked great alone. Even if your doormat looks good still you could swap your front and backdoor rugs just for a fun seasonal change!
Fourth step for decorating your porch for fall- add a wreath, basket or a door knocker to your front door. Our pineapple door knocker was on our door when we moved in. I just layered this basket on the door knocker and put some plants inside! I tied the basket with twine so it wouldn’t cover the knocker. You could also fill the basket with large branches of fall leaves with they start changing!
Fifth step for decorating your porch for fall- add height and layers! You want to try to balance the scale of your front door with something substantial. I found this tall metal house and thought it would look so fun filled with pumpkins in the fall and logs in the winter. I put a boxwood topiary next to it to tier the layers down. Then mixed in A LOT of pumpkins down the steps! TIP- to make your pumpkins last longer I spray with a water based sealer like this.
Sixth step for decorating your porch for fall- Pick a color scheme. Repeat colors on different areas of your porch. I spray painted some planters I had last year with this charcoal spray paint. Now the black is repeated down the steps, in an effort to unify it and make it feel less busy even with a lot of stuff.
I found most everything at The Home Depot! I love shopping at The Home Depot because they carry thousands of on-trend products and pieces to complete any project! I often shop online then pop into the store for finishing things or for the start of a project.
- Wreath
- House Numbers
- Door Knocker

PS- I am never worried about ordering pieces online from The Home Depot because they offer free returns at any of their stores!
