Hanging Chairs- How to Hang a Hanging Chair

We currently have 6, yes SIX hanging chairs in our house! Granted, 5 of the hanging chairs are outside but, if you can’t tell, I am a fan! Our first hanging chair we ever had in our home was a double hanging chair in our girls room. It felt like a dream to have one! They just seem so special and whimsical. I thought I would share how high we hang the chairs from the floor, how to attach a hanging chair to a ceiling and how far from the wall.

Examples of Hanging Chairs-

In Evie’s bedroom makeover we hung this darling navy hanging chair 16″ from the floor and about 15″ from the wall. We hung it based off of where the stud was in the ceiling and so it wouldn’t block the closet doors too much when they open. We put felt pads on the back of the hanging chair to protect the wall. Also a leather ottoman was a great stepping stool for Evie to easily get in her chair. PS- if you are having a lot of kids over I told my sister-in-law to stick the tall giraffe behind the hanging chair to protect the wall (kids can get wild with other kids and new things).
In the girls shared bedroom in our Connecticut home we hung this double hanging chair. It was a favorite thing!!! We hung it 18″ off the ground. And since we had more room in here, we were able to hang it 2 feet from the wall. Hanging it further from the wall was fun, we could swing in it a little!
On our covered porch we hung this hanging chair, it does come in an outdoor version, but since our porch is covered we just used the chair we already had and it has held up great!

How to attach a hanging chair to the ceiling-

Step one is to use a Stud Finder to find the stud. The trick is finding out which way the beams are running, typically studs are 16 inches apart. This is a good rule of thumb and will help you find the studs with the finder.
With your drill, drill a pilot hole, this insures that you have found the stud! The holes can easily be filled with putty, use the smallest drill bit you have so that the holes are easier to fill.
After finding the stud, mark the holes that you need to drill for the wall mount. Drill into the studs using a quarter of the sized bit as the size of the hex lag screw. Screw the hex lag screw in using a ratchet wrench or a hex bit on your power drill. Once fully tightened ensure that it is fully secured by pulling on the mount, there should be no wiggling. We used this mount, it will hold 2,000 lbs!
Before you tie the knot, loop the rope through the hook and let it naturally hang. This step will make sure you chair hangs in the right direction!! Nothing more frustrating than a chair that faces the wall.
We looped one rope through the front and one rope through the back. Then started to criss cross the rope going down. We found our rope at The Home Depot, they have to cut it, so make sure you know the length you need before go. We recommend getting a rope the height of your walls plus an extra foot, so in this case, our walls are 10′ so we got an 11′ rope.
Once we started to run out of rope Kevin just tied two knots on top of each other. And this held in place.

How far from the floor to hang a hanging chair?

For a standard seat height from the floor, I go with 18″ to 20″. Keeping in mind when you sit in it it lowers slightly. For a younger kids room or an area that kids will be sitting in the chair, we hang them about 16″ from the floor, so everyone can easily get into it and not far from the ground if they happen to fall out.

How far from the wall is your hanging chair?

Where your stud is, that determines where chair goes. Most of our chairs are pretty close to the walls, about 16-20″. If we had a really large room then we could skip to the next stud and hang it further out. Our chairs have always been fine close to the wall, and low to the ground, you can’t really swing too much, more like a glider chair.

    Hi! I love these hanging chairs and have the biggest one that is in your last pic from Serena and Lilly. What I’d like to know is, did u get that cushion from them or where would be a good source to find a nice cushion for this big of chair? So far I have a stack of thick foam padding and then I drape a faux fur over it all but I’d kinda like something possibly washable and yet thick..
