I have done a lot of projects in this home that belongs to friends who live around the corner from us. They have a small cape like we do, but they have this nice bonus sunroom, which is a welcome and used space! It was just lacking in style and coziness. All it really needed was some new window treatments, ceiling fan and open up the floor space with a smaller built-in electric fireplace!
Let’s look at the sunroom before. If you know me, you know I was itching to get my hands on it. Especially since I knew that little changes would make such a difference! We would love an extra space like this!
Sunroom Before-
First notice cute Finn š and he is playing with a fun little play kitchen. I didn’t move it out for pictures. I just moved it to the other side of the room, which makes more sense for how the room is set-up. I do think it is best to design your room in sections, you do not need toys spilling over every inch of your home. Now we could add a chair to create a cozy little conversation area and a separate play area on the other side of the room.
Sunroom After-
A really nice addition is THIS new Hunter Fan. I LOVE it!! It is indoor outdoor too! Makes such a difference to the space! Scott built the electric fireplace surround, very similar to our electric fireplace. But he put shiplap around it.
Electric Fireplace addition took Scott about 12 hours to build the fireplace surround and the mantle, plus painting. I don’t have a full tutorial on this. But you can see below how he built the frame and added ship lap and molding to it. The materials cost about $150 plus the fireplace was $400 (you can find the exact electric fireplace HERE). He did have to hire an electrician to to add a dedicated outlet for the fireplace and add an outlet behind the tv.
After he started to build the fireplace I asked them if they loved that stain glass windowā¦..because it didn’t scream their style. They both said they didn’t like it. We talked about hanging something over it or putting shiplap right over the glass. Scott ended up taking the glass out and added shiplap in that space (the other side of the glass is a bathroom). Now it looks like it is part of the fireplace! Also added some simple white shelves to finish it up. Really love how it came together.
You can find the exact white shelves HERE and most everything else she had or I gave her from my home.
Sunroom Before-
They had blinds in all the windows before and they were not really doing anything for the room. I don’t want to bash on blinds, probably 80% of us have blinds or shutters. But I think we do the blinds because it is the easy “thing” to do, so everyone just puts blinds in. If we took the time to decide on what we want the room to FEEL like we might not go with blinds, or maybe you would and that is ok. Do what you love in your space. You can find very affordable roman shades or bamboo shades. If you do have blinds, even adding some curtain panels will soften and cozy up the look! (I shared more options in bamboo and roman shades HERE).
Sun Room After-
Ta-da! I am so happy they trusted me and went with THESE navy fabric roman shades. Jess was worried they would be too dark. But I reminded her that if we did a white roman shade it would feel very similar to the wood blinds she had. Bonus they are insulting and room darkening. Jess and Scott have navy through their entire home, and navy is a timeless color. I actually sent her a picture of my kitchen when I had white roman shades compared to the dark roman shades I have now. Helps to get a visual before you order. See below…
See how the darker roman shades brings up the colors in the floor and adds depth! (You can read about my roman shades HERE).
Hopefully we will be sharing the other side of the room soon!

I love all of these renovation you have done. So beautiful. Good job!!!
I have a question. With a standard size couch do you think you should always use a coffee table? I’d love other options. Thank you!
Wish I lived around the corner from you. :-/ I have a few rooms you can play with. š
Love a good before and after pic…such wonderful transformations! Great job, Brooke!
Monica
Ditto!! Great job Brooke
I can’t believe how inexpensive this makeover was. Just takes some time and a creative eye. Love it.

I’ve been following you for a while now. I love all the rooms that you’ve posted. You are so creative and your style is so refreshing. I’ve adapted some of your style into my coastal condo. You did a wonderful job on this sunroom. I love that bike picture. Will keep looking for something similar.

Love the sun room! Actually all the transformations are beautiful!! Iām loving the idea of an electric fireplace when we finish our basement!!
I just love everything you touch. Itās always so pretty, affordable and so well cozied up! This friend is truly blessed to have you. Her home just might be getting as. Cute as yours, but really one can top yours. You are the best. No need to keep asking us if we want before, after, or stories. We want it all and look forward to whatever it is, every day!!!ā¤ļø
This looks amazing!!! I was seriously looking around my living room today thinking Connecticut is not that far away from Delaware…and I am super fun to be friends with š
But seriously I love how you utilize small spaces and how cozy they look. Youāre always full of great tips to copy š
ahhhhh I bet you would be super fun to do a project for!! Thank you!!
Do you have any suggestions for how to make outside mount shades look best? We replaced windows and lost quite a bit or all of the depth in which to mount shades. Iāve never had outside-mount window treatments before and am not really a fan. Thanks for any advice you can offer!
you could add curtain panels? I think they look fine if there is no molding you are covering up!
I love that fireplace wall and custom shelving. What a great solution for that stained glass window space.
Oh my goodness I love all of it! Your designs are beautiful and refreshing!!!
Youāve done a wonderful job! š
What a cheerful, inviting room! I love all the rooms youāve done in that house and I have never made the connection that that kitchen, porch and master were all from the same house. Love it.
oh thank you!!!
Did you renovate their kitchen as well?
Beautiful changes!!! The rooms are so much lighter and brighter! I’ll bet you’re loving it!!!!
