Accent Lighting is probably one of the most important things to my personal design style. Wall sconces, lamps, candles, twinkle lights are all ways to create a cozy, warm feeling. Living Plants and the right paint color are also at the top of my design essentials too. I found the COOLEST wall sconce EVER from eBay. When I found it I knew exactly where I wanted to put it. And then that lead to wanting to paint our interior kitchen door. I read a blog post recently from someone I admire. She photographed a friend’s home who lives in France and she pointed out that most everything in his home is unique and collected. Vintage or vintage inspired. Leaving you feeling inspired and appreciating the nicer, simple things in life.
I have found some unique accessories from eBay in the past and where I found my beloved new light. The wall sconce is from Design Within Reach. You can find brand new items from higher-end companies like Design Within Reach for great prices. And most items on eBay have the “buy it now”option, so no bidding necessary. Also a lot of items ship for free!
Our new wall sconce caused a domino effect. We decided to paint the inside of our kitchen door. While I loved the Green (Cushing Green from Benjamin Moore) it was feeling too dark and we were ready for a change.
We were actually deciding between black or pink. Then when I was at the paint store I went back thru an old Instagram post where I asked all of you what color to paint it. So many of you voted to leave it green or paint it black. There was one comment that said to paint it white and it peeked my curiosity! I got to thinking the white would really brighten up our small kitchen and accent our dark Roman Shade. We tried both samples on the door and the black was just too dark and heavy with the floors and our Roman Shade.
Surprisingly we went with white! When I recently showed what we were up to on Instagram I got a flood of messages to paint it PINK. While I love pink, it just felt like it would be too much for me and dominate the kitchen. So we went with Ultra White from Valspar, exact same white that is on our built-in banquette.
So happy we tried something different and listened to that one suggestion. Yes, it does feel bigger. And it really allows our new wall sconce to pop and pull out the other gold accents in the kitchen.
Try focusing on bringing in unique accessories to your home. Pieces that you will cherish and love for years and years. I have many pieces that I have held onto because they are so unique they just won’t ever go out of style because they are their OWN style. I imagine my gold vintage typewriter, my broken mirror turned into a chalkboard, art, oversized candelabra, our pink piano and pink dresser, that marble kitchen table. I really could go on and on about some of my favorite unique accessories and furniture. What pieces do you own that make your style you?
And you can never go wrong with a unique wall sconce! We added the Magic Light Trick to the Wall Sconce, avoiding the fee of hiring an electrician. We just use a remote to turn on the light. Easy enough. And marks a check on that all important accent lighting!
As I was looking on eBay I found Design Within Reach has our similar house numbers, but in a variety of colors HERE. They get new things in all the time and things go fast when they have them (like my wall sconce). I just checked the Design Within Reach Outlet Page and loved these current pieces-
Gorgeous Round Ash Wood Dining Table

Cigar Wall Sconces
I LOVE the white!!!gives the room continuity! And so fresh! That was the best choice!!
Oh thank you Kris!
You surprised us with the white door. I completely expected pink, but the white looks fresh & it does visually expand the kitchen as your eye keeps moving. Another great choice!! Love the new sconce. I absolutely have to try the magic light trick…..I have a million places where it would be a great addition. I’m a huge lover of vintage, salvaged, thrifted & free pieces. I use them throughout our home and the things that I believe define my decor style are the pieces of architectural salvage (doors, windows, trim pieces) and the ironstone/transferware plates that I hang on the walls. As our house is on the small side (under 1400 sq ft) I like to repeat the decorative elements I use and these items show up in almost every room.
The door color is LOVELY and so is the sconce! Thanks for sharing your apprehension since the majority expected another color. It makes me feel better to know others are vulnerable too – but you went with what you wanted and it worked, big time! Love it.
I LOVE BOTH…door color (agree makes your kitchen look bigger and brighter), and the sconce (its whimsical and FUN!!)

Love the white and the wall sconce is fabulous!! Great choices again!! 😁- Christine
Everything is beautiful, Brooke! Love the door white!
Brooke!
I LOVE the nautical sconce with your capiz shell chandelier! It is just enough to whisper beach cottage and not over do it. Also draws one onto / deck/Summer dining room . . . with that fabulous beach sign. The sconce looks like it was salvaged off a 100 foot ⛵️ sailboat! So chic!
Gah! The white looks so great because it highlights all the other amazing decor around your kitchen! I feel like hearing the suggestion for white sounds “boring” a lot of the time but it really works well here, and it’s not boring at all! You guys do such amazing work♥️
Thank you Sara!
The white looks perfect. Love how much it brightens the room.
Hi, I’m a new follower! I really like the white! I’m going to share some of my nerdiness with you and tell you something most people don’t know. It’s actually “piqued” when you’re talking about piquing your interest. Weird, huh? I kind of try to write it all the time now that I know that. Ha! Speaking of piquing interest, I need to make a magic sconce! Now I’m going to be looking around my house for somewhere to put one…
Ahh I LOVE the white!! I’m such a sucker for white- so clean, and makes things feel so open! I love all your unique pieces. A couple favorites that I have are a vintage mirror that I have on my vanity, and a vintage lamp with painted flowers that was my grandma’s 😊😍
love the white color. Pink could have been nice as well, but I like it more with white for the kitchen! good decision! do you have any tips on how to paint the cabinets or doors (uneven surfaces?) supplies and maybe some tips? we might move out soon to a place we liked but the cabinets look very old and they have a white cream color I don’t like. hope you can share your experience with us! thank you!
Thank you Mariella! I actually didn’t paint our cabinets we had them refaced from a local company! And new doors put on. I didn’t like the door style, so that is one of the reasons we did it that way!
I think you made a GREAT choice! Love the white! Looks so fresh, bright and open! I might try adding a second light to your beautiful sconce. Everything pulls together so nicely! Don’t be afraid to share what you love for your own home! Like you say- love what you love! ❤️
Love it Brooke! Thanks for being so inspiring 💖
I’m loving all of the changes I’ve made around my house because of you!
I love the white!!! I initially voted pink but the white looks amazing! Great choice!
Beautiful Brooke! The white was the right choice! And the remote control puck light I also love. Where did you get it and what is it called?
Love the white door! Definitely the best choice! I also think black hardware on the door would make the white really pop…just a suggestion 🙂
White door makes a huge improvement. Love the sconce but wonder how you access the cabinet next to it since sconce blocks door from opening completely?
