Playhouse Makeover at my Sister’s House

My sister and brother in law built their playhouse around 15 years ago. It has held up nicely, just needed a little updating, and a new floor! I was saying how much I would have loved this as a kid. Her older boys 12-14 still enjoy playing out here. Sharing their playhouse refresh and fun finds to make any space a cool kid hangout!

Playhouse Before

Here is the cute playhouse before, the floors getting worn down with a lot of open space but nowhere to really sit and hang out.

Looks brand new! The floors make such a difference! Added some fun furniture pieces and accessories to make it feel updated and a cool hangout. I could see Finn loving this with his friends!

New Floor

They were wanting to redo the floor that was getting worn down. I thought these peel and stick tiles would be so cute, and cost effective! We covered the original plywood with a thin particle board to make it easy for the tile to stick to. We have used the same brand of floor pops before in my parents kitchen remodel 2 years ago and it is holding up really well!

Starting in the middle front, we peeled the backing off the tile and pressed it down, rolling over it with a seam roller. We went with a diamond pattern. This process is really easy to do. It took 20 minutes to lay down the entire main area of the floor. Then, about an hour to cut and lay down the outer edges. Kevin used a utility knife and a long level to cut the tile pieces. Finally, we caulked around the entire edge of the playhouse that meets the floor pops. So dang cute! What a difference! I loved how the walls were already black and white and this tied everything in.

Walls

We love the pegboard wall. Basically the nerf gun wall. First we hung long 2 inch boards, one on top then middle then along bottom. We then attached the peg board to those wood pieces. There needs to be a gap to be able to hang hooks to the peg board. Who else has a ton of nerf guns that could use a designated spot?! The opposite wall is painted with chalkboard paint so they can color or play games.

Accessories

Added color to these white walls, we found some really cute things! Those pennant banners were last year’s target dollar spot find. The dart board comes with the chalkboard score keeper and makes for the cutest wall art! It’s hung on a little door that opens to the monkey bars. Latches on the outside so little kids don’t fall out.

Lights

How darling are these metal shade string lights?! The colors are perfect to tie in the reds and blues throughout my sisters backyard.

I used two strands. First down the center of the playhouse to add light. Then along the front to highlight this darling playhouse.

Furniture

The playhouse needed some comfortable seating, I found these outdoor armless cushion chairs that are so sturdy! They had a wood bench in here for sitting and the boys were thrilled for a cozier spot to hang. So comfy to sit and read or play games together.

Or chill and have a treat in the shade.

My sister and her grandson had a little ice cream party in their new playhouse.

You can use this camp stool as a little mini table or another spot to sit.

I added this giant blue floor cushion for more extra comfortable seating!

I finished off the playhouse with some potted flowers. The open playhouse calls for some nature brought inside too! These pots have a built-in saucer to help with water drainage. Filled the pots with yellow and red flowers, so cute!

It’s fun that the playhouse is raised, and feels like a fort or treehouse. You can see the layout, a slide off the side and a door in the back that latches from the outside (so littles don’t fall out) that opens to monkey bars and climbing wall.

They have a rock creek along the front of the play area. They just turn on a switch with the hose and it will fill up with water!

You can see how the patio is around the corner, and how all the colors connect perfectly. The playhouse is painted Intrigue from Benjamin Moore (color matched at Home Depot in exterior paint). She has the same color on her exterior doors and shutters.

The basic design of the playhouse is a platform with 3 walls and a corrugated tin roof. They didn’t sink the posts in cement; they used concrete deck blocks. The playhouse stands 40 inches off the ground. The dimensions are 6 feet wide x 81 inches height x 140 inches length (92 inches inside playhouse and 4 feet length of front deck).

I had so much fun decorating their playhouse. My sister texted and said her boys had a sleep-out in it already. So happy the boys love their new space!
