When we moved into our rental apartment we immediately decorated it to make it feel comfortable and welcoming for our family. My surroundings impact my energy and productivity. If you are reading this, then I bet you have similar feelings! Today I am sharing our bedroom and things you can do to any bedroom to make it feel cozy even if you are in a rental! Enjoy the space you are in, no matter where it is.
And I do get asked often, what mattress we have, since most of you know I try to be careful of bringing in toxins into our home. About 6 months ago I shared the non-toxic mattresses we bought, and I mentioned it took me some adjusting too, it was firmer than I was used to. So in our rental I wanted to try another non-toxic brand, that hopefully wasn’t as firm. We will need several new mattresses for the home, so it was a good time to try something new. I have to say, the first night I was in love. No adjustment period.

Non-Toxic Mattress

The non-toxic mattress we got this time was Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress. We actually have had the Tuft & Needle Original Mattress in a twin for a couple years and any guest that slept on it commented how comfy it was.

Tuft & Needle is one of the highest rated toxic-free mattress brands. I like that the mattresses are made in the U.S. and are more affordable than most toxic-free mattresses. Tuft & Needle is CertiPur label which means it is certified to contain no harmful chemicals, heavy metals, PBDEs, phthalates, formaldehyde or carcinogens.

Also REALLY like that the Hybrid is gray!! I will be ordering this mattress in a king for our bed and giving Finn this queen for his room.
Bedding and Decor

Linen is my favorite look for bedding. It just looks extra cozy and layered. Not to mention, wrinkled is totally acceptable with linen. I ordered the linen knowing I wanted to use it in our new home too.

We have these linen sheets and this linen duvet cover. Linen is moisture-wicking, and is great for those who sleep hot. Also linen sheets are the most durable sheets! I did buy them from Tuft & Needle and love them (we have them in the sand, they come in 6 colors).

A good duvet insert is a must-have for fluffy bedding. I will pay more to get a good insert. We have this down duvet insert in this linen duvet cover. I picked down because it stays fluffy over time and it wicks away moisture to keep you cool and dry in the summer and keeps you warmer in the winter.

Light Fixture Trick

The lights in our rental were just a super small basic flush-mount that really did nothing for the room. So I layered a lamp shade over the current light fixture. Great for rentals or just an easy update without spending a lot of money. No need to hire an electrician. You could really use any lamp shade!

I just used some extra thick fishing wire to hook this shade over the current light fixture. Love how it turned out!

Mostly all the big pieces of furniture were in this rental when we moved in. I just brought in lamps, plants and accessories. Never underestimate the power good lighting and plants bring to a room.

This desk was in the rental and it was on the opposite side of the room. I moved it under the window and hung some curtain panels for a nice place to work. Kids often did homework in here.

Hung some hats on the wall with a super thin nail. They look cute and are a great way to store hats!

We have one accent wall painted in Serious Gray from Sherwin Williams. Painting an accent wall is an easy way to add a personal touch to a rental, we can just paint the wall back to the white when we move out.

I ordered this art from Lindsay Letters for our new home and when it was delivered to our apartment…I had to hang it. Love the depth it adds to the room and with the simple linen bedding.

And YES to a rug on top of carpet. A rug really grounds the room and pulls it all together. This rug I ordered for our family room and just put in here when it came in.

Happy I decorate this space when we moved in. It has helped us to really enjoy our “in-between” period! Shop the room below….PS- extended Memorial Day Sale on Tuft & Needle from 6/1-6/13~
👏🏼✨Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for also sharing here. I love reading ‘why/how’ you put a room together.
I have a question do you decorate for each holiday? I know you do the major holidays but like I try to do something a little for each holiday and I just didn’t know if that’s good or bad?
Do you have two comforters in this duvet cover?
no, just one!!! It is a nice fluffy insert!
It’s so cozy and comfortable and beautiful at the same time! I love it!!! The art brings a soft layered element too. I have looked at that rug for 2 years now. Is it a caramel color like the name or is it more of a tan color? Is it very soft and thick? Thanks for your inspiration and insights!
