We Painted our Piano- Best Tips for Painting a Piano

I have wanted to paint our piano since we got it off FB Marketplace, but I held off because it was such a pretty piano, gorgeous wood… I thought it would grow on me. That being said, it wasn’t the right look for us. I wanted something a little more funky, less traditional. Plus the wood felt dark wherever I put it in our home. Taking my own advice, if you don’t like it, change it! Don’t fight the urge to paint something!

Piano Before-

I really only have a good before of the piano at Christmas time. The piano used to be in our dining room, but after moving a few things around we discovered it fit perfectly in our family room right in this nook by our fireplace.
I wanted to paint the piano a color we already had in our home, a call back. I was deciding between these three colors, all from Farrow & Ball (we had color matched at our local paint store that had the formula). Hague Blue (on the left), Kittiwake (in the center, which looks a lot lighter here than it is in our dining room) and Sulking Room Pink (far right). You can see all those colors in our home HERE.
Painting the piano blue, was what I was leaning towards, and after living with the samples on the bench for a day, we decided on Hague Blue from Farrow & Ball. I am THRILLED with how this piano turned out!!! We actually have that same paint color in our entry and it feels a lot brighter in here, just shows that paint looks different in every room. Love how it looks with our blue picture light and bird art!
We did not sand the piano before because there wasn’t any damage or uneven wood. You only need to sand if wood is chipped or uneven. We did not prime before either, we bought a paint with primer in it. The type of paint you use is key! We like to use Benjamin Moore Advance, Interior Waterborne Alkyd in Semi-Gloss.
I did make sure to tape off all the keys, and anything I didn’t want painted, like the gold knobs, feet etc. For the KAWAI letters I went around each letter with a tiny paint brush, I found that to be easiest.
I used a Wooster Paint Brush for the smaller areas and a Smooth Mini Roller (make sure to get mini) for larger spots. The finish looks PERFECT!!! PS- I got that vintage bench in Paris!

Design Plan-

I did put together a design plan for our family room before I decided what color to paint the piano, I just googled “blue piano” and found images I could add to my plan. We are going to swap for a pink sectional in our family room, and move some of the furniture in here to our cabin. Find sources to this plan HERE and blog post on curtains HERE.
