Adding Pattern to Plain Roman Shades- The Girls Bedroom Window Treatments and Window Seat

Recently we added color to two white roman shades that are in our girls bedrooms. When we moved into this house four years ago, I wasn’t sure what I wanted and didn’t want to commit to a certain color or pattern when we were just establishing the girls rooms. Their plain white roman shades felt like white sheets on their windows, too simple for the rest of their room. I finally went for what I have been wanting to do to their windows and added some pattern and color, sharing that below and information on their window seat cushion.

Easy to personalize a simple white roman shade. We had to order custom roman shades since their windows are larger, I got from HERE. They are in linen, white and have privacy lining. You can find roman shades HERE too.

We also have cordless roman shades in belgian linen in several spots in our home, and love them as is.

Roman Shades in Lola’s Room-

This is what it looked like right when we moved in. I always was hanging banners over their roman shades to add pattern and color. PS- keep reading for information on window seat cushion.

And here it is now, love Lola’s cute room. Hung this gold curtain rod to match the hardware on her cabinets and hung these curtain panels that matched her pillows (sadly the pillows are sold out). To pull it all together, we cut and added the same rick rack to the roman shade as the curtain panels we hung. Love the look of a roman shade and curtain panels in her room. Has a fun whimsical look-like a canopy.

Here was are cutting off the rick rack.

We opened the window and went the easy route of leaving the roman shade up. Then I sprayed the bottom of the shade with spray adhesive and followed by applying the fabric to the adhesive spray. The spray adhesive doesn’t yellow, and is safe for indoors, but again did it with the window open.

Applying pressure to make sure it adheres, which it stuck pretty instantly. We let the lighter blue part of the ribbon overhang so you didn’t see any white of the shade.

Ella’s Roman Shades and Window Seat Information-

Window Seat Info– Originally the custom cushions cost about $600 in labor including the 4″ cushion and the plain white fabric (Made The Sewing Nerd). A couple years later I had someone local add the tufting a the new black fabric (I wanted a French mattress cushion look, which I wanted originally but didn’t communicate it, I had Ina’s Workshop do this. Make sure to show a photo of what you want.)
Our bench cushions are 22″ deep x 80″ long. I needed 5 yards per cushion.

I had a shop on Etsy make our kitchen banquette, and LOVED those!!!! My favorite look.

Roman Shades in Ella’s Room-

This is Ella’s room, and for her roman shade, we covered the entire thing in light-weight fabric (make sure the fabric isn’t heavy or the roman shade won’t work the same). I wanted it to match her window seat, I found the fabric HERE.

The fabric wasn’t big enough to cover the whole shade so I centered the piece I had, then cut two pieces to match and attach on both sides. We ironed the edges so it matched up to the pattern. We applied the spray adhesive in small sections then pressed fabric onto the roman shade.

Here we are attaching the side panels. Spray small sections then applying pressure to adhere the fabric.

Lastly we flipped the shade over, sprayed and wrapped the sides. (We had a shower curtain underneath do the shade didn’t get dirty.)

We ended up adding the same curtain panels in pink and cutting off the rick rack trim to the base of the roman shade like Lola’s! Now they look the same from the street view. (Also used this gold curtain rod to match the hardware on her cabinets).
