We were hoping our home would be done by now. Famous last words of someone remodeling or building a home! We bought our 1970’s ranch home in December, but didn’t actually start demo until end of March. We hoped it would be finished when Ella’s best friend, mom, and sister were visiting this week. They weren’t planning on staying at our home, but we would have loved to have them over to the house! So we ARE making the most of them being here this week. We’ve been showing them all around Utah. And we gave them a tour of our home. Thought I would give you an update too!
The sheetrock is done, just need to mud and tape this week. Then the wood floors go in (they cover them to keep them protected) while they do molding, trim, etc. then paint! I told Kevin we have come so far, but there is still a lot to do! We have our apartment until end of September, so that is the goal to finish by.
I have a few last things I need to decide on. One is the look of the stair railing and banister. The steps will be wood, to match our floors. I will show you what the stairs look like now and some inspiration photos! Let’s first take a look at our home’s current state!
A few pictures of the house so far-
This is the room you see when you walk in off to the right. We want to do a cool plaster treatment on the fireplace. Our dining table is ready to be put in as soon as we are allowed to!
In our bedroom, we decided to keep the brick and paint it in Limewash (Bianco White). We also painted the wood windows in Tricorn Black, which we plan to do on all the windows.
The curved wall in our basement that we recently did the mortar and Limewash treatment on. Looking good with sheetrock!
This spot is where the wet bar (see plans here) will go. Before there was an opening on the smaller wall that lead to the bathroom. We had to close it off to be able to fit the pink fridge! Luckily, there is still an entrance to the bathroom from the bedroom, which will make it a great guest bathroom. We do have another bathroom in the basement that is outside the bedroom.
Now that you’ve gotten the update on where we are at, let’s chat stairs and railings! This is the main entry, stairs off to the right when you walk in. Remember this when you see some inspiration photos below….
And stairs to our basement.
Stair Inspiration photos-
Both of our staircases, are on the smaller side. Not grande, but I want them to have a fun impact in terms of character! Here are a few options I liked. Let me know what look is your favorite.
What stair look is your favorite??? I am leaning towards the metal, the last inspiration photo! I feel like it goes with the style of home- modern yet whimsical.

Definitely the last photo! The curve of that railing is so great! I really like how they hung the plants off the railing too. I did like the tall wood railing also, but feel it is too bulky. I really like the openness of the last photo. So unique!

First question, will the railing just go on the open part of the staircase, or all the way to the top? If its just on the bottom, you won’t see the curvature of the last photo. I was surprised that you even showed the plain white railing, but I kind of like it. I’m not a fan of the railing in the last photo, it looks cool, but seems like little kids could fall off the stairs pretty easily and may get hurt. Just a thought. That said I have seen metal railings I like, I’m just not a fan of the ones you chose. But to each their own. 🙂

Love the ‘all metal’ photo! I’m sure whatever you choose will looks amazing!

I also love the metal railing! I think is will go perfectly with your renovation. Will be exciting to see what you choose.

I love the last railing, but I feel like altering to make it meet code, even if you used glass panels, would alter the simplicity of it. Love the Lauren Leiss banister you showed on IG. So many options would look good, but I’m drawn to the black and the delicate proportions you’ve shown.

I like the simple iron railing – there won’t be as much of it showing as in the last photo – I feel you’ll get less impact than the last photo.
I also like the stair riser and treads.
So fun!!

Yes loving the last metal railing!

I like the look of the last metal railing but is it code? Children could fall thru under that railing unless it has glass all the way up. It would not be legal in our city, state. When we sold our house we had a 1912 house with a 1912 railing, we had to make it taller for the sale as we had to meet current building codes so I read the code and learned all sorts of things.

Guess I’m in the minority here..I sure like the painted white railings, especially the tall one.

You’ll need to check residential code in your area. Typically the rule is that you cannot have greater than 4″ opening higher than 36″ off the ground. This photo may be from another country where codes are not as strict. Ask your architect what is required.
