We gifted this bedroom makeover for a sweet friend of mine, Nikki. I met her while waiting for our daughters, who were killing it in a hip hop class:). Nikki was instantly an example of a genuine, loving person. We got talking and I found out that her home had burned down about a year prior. They were all set to move in, and had moved in all of their furniture and possessions. Thankfully they decided not to sleep there, because their brand new home caught fire and burned down in the middle of the night. It was a traumatic experience, as you can imagine. They had to rebuild and do it all over again (and lost a lot of money thru the process).
Recently I stopped by to see her new place, it is all very beautiful, but she acknowledged it was lacking the finishing touches. I asked her if I could gift her new bedding and do a little bedroom makeover, she was all for it. And I knew her bedroom was the last room she would do!
Thank you The Company Store for sponsoring this post
Let’s look at the master bedroom BEFORE-
Let me first address that this is the only wall the bed can go on (I checked). I asked her if she minded a bed with a low headboard that only cut into the window a little, and she was good with that. The priorities were new bedding, curtain panels, low profile bed and a rug that fit the room better. This rug was given to her after their house fire, it was just too big for the room.
I asked Nikki for any inspiration photos she had, so I knew a direction to go. I don’t always ask for an inspiration photo. If you remember Robins makeover she had a rug that she wanted to use, so I used that rug as my “inspiration” for her space. Above are the inspiration photos Nikki sent to me. Funny how that headboard is in both the inspiration photos, but that headboard wouldn’t work for her (she didn’t want something that high). So I really honed in on the look of the bedding that were in these two photos- simple and natural.
Master Bedroom After-
Can you handle it??? The bedding, the curtains, smaller rug, low profile bed, and of course plants complete this boho inspired master bedroom!
Walls are painted- Blackened 2011 from Farrow & Ball
Let’s break down the bedding-
All of the bedding is from The Company Store. I am really a bedding snob. There I said it. But being a bedding snob does not equal expensive bedding, It means quality and REALLY good inserts. If you can’t afford linen bedding like this, I highly recommend saving up for a nice duvet insert like I used in this bedding. You will be able to use that insert FOREVER!!! (if you put a cover over it)
Duvet Insert- European Down Baffled Duvet Insert This is very fluffy and full, you get what you pay for- quality! I have had one like this for over 10 years! I put a queen insert in the queen duvet cover.
White Linen Duvet LOVE the eyelet detailing around the edge and also that this duvet cover has ties inside to keep the duvet in place.
Linen Sheets (parchment) Linen sheets get softer and better with age. These are sheets you are going to want to show-off! I have them exposed as part of the casual look!
Standard Sleeping Pillowcase Sham (parchment) They can sleep on these pillows and yet they look gorgeous as part of the bedding style.
Linen Sham (gray) These have a really lovely edging that makes the sham feel bigger and more full!
Sham Insert- European Down I recommend the firmer option- they fill the insert nicely.
White Linen Euro Sham I always love a classic white euro sham as a nice backdrop that is so timeless.
Euro Insert- Feather Firm Another great insert- go for the firm to fill in the insert best.
Cotton Blanket (best seller) I actually found this blanket by searching “best sellers”! I can see why it is! It is a tight weave that won’t snag. It also drapes so pretty like an oversized throw (I layered it at the end of the bed to break up all the white on the duvet
The Company store has ALL bedding 25% off!!!!! That is huge! Use code- B20BEDBATH shop HERE
Love the different shades of linen on the bedding! It all plays so lovely together!
I did swap out her 9×12 for a 6×9 rug. What a difference that makes to the space! A bigger rug isn’t always better. Also the gray one before felt too contemporary for the boho look she wanted. The new rug was actually ours from our living room! I ran home and grabbed it, knowing it would look amazing in this space and with the bedding! I had thought I would grab a jute rug, but this one is even better! (you can find this rug on my shop my home page HERE)
If you caught my Instagram stories you saw how we were joking about “Naked Nikki”! Her bathroom is on the right and her closet is on the left. So if she wants to air dry, you might get a show around 8 am:) JUST KIDDING! But maybe Naked Nikki needs this bathrobe and we know she is going to appreciate the curtain panels!
Amazing how much plants add to the space. With her large oversized window this fiddle leaf fig will thrive in here!
We had one of those lamps not being used (and that Kevin just repaired) I was able to find one more to match! (I love lamps to match on nightstands). Nikki got emotional when she saw the butterflies in the lamp it reminded her of one of her best friends who just passed away giving birth. It was a really hard time for Nikki, she took her friends kids into her home as her own as the grieving father sorted everything out. Nikki said that she saw butterflies all over and in the most random times and places after her passing, she felt they were a signal from her dear friend that she was ok. I love that even our home decor can comfort us though hard times and it is another reminder that the efforts we put into our homes is never in vain.
Tune back in tomorrow, I will share all the details of the rest of the room from the curtain panels to the accessories! (update go HERE for curtains, bed and more)

What a great story and a wonderful makeover for this special lady. Great job.
Brooke, you knocking it out of the park once again. This room is so relaxing and beautiful. Such a kind thing that you did for Nikki, as well. I love that rug and looked for it on your Shop my Home page but didn’t see it. Can you please link it? Thank you!
It’s so beautiful! The curtains made such a difference! You did a great job!
Looks great – but how do you handle the privacy issue? Also where do you get your fiddle leaf fig trees from?
It is real!!! And the privacy they can slide the drapes over the bracket!
So cozy and beautiful. Nikki sounds so deserving!🦋 thanks for sharing all the bedding looks!!!
This is so beautifully restful. And what a lovely person the recipient is.
This is so beautifully restful. And what a lovely person the recipient is. Love all the neutrals.
This room looks so peaceful and lovely!!! Your friend is a lucky, well deserving lady!!
I have been following you on IG for a while thanks to my sister, and I love your home!
What size duvet did you use? Our new mattress is super tall, and my Queen duvet barely covers the sides and the end. I read that King duvets aren’t any longer head to toe, and it might be too long on the sides.
We used a queen on a queen bed. Typically a good quality duvet is slightly oversized…..
So beautiful!! Do you know where the side tables came from?
thanks! She said Home Goods!
I love this makeover! I bought the linen duvet you recommended and love it. I got a king. Only problem is my duvet has some extra space inside the cover, despite using the ties. Any recommendations? I know you mentioned two ikea inserts for your daughter but curious if you recommend that for other inserts that might be fluffier to begin with. We have another pottery barn duvet cover for my sons room and same problem. Our inserts are all Eddie Bauer home. The overhang of the cover is driving me crazy and you are the queen of bedding so thought I might ask!
Beautiful room! I love the neutral look.
Brooke, have you ever redone dining spaced in small ( er) cape cod homes?
💕
All of these bedrooms are just so divine! They are true retreat spaces and such a gift to all of the people whose rooms you’ve made over. I just love seeing them, and knowing your process as well as the stories behind your makeovers. You have such a gift for telling people’s stories as well as making their homes pretty. It’s what makes you unique and so wonderful in the blog/social media world. Keep doing it, please!
I lost a friend just under a year ago, both of us at age 49 so a little later in life than Nikki’s friend, but I too know how heartbreaking it is. The one-year anniversary of my friend’s death is coming up, and I am filled with sadness still. And add to that for Nikki, the trauma of a house fire! So sad. I am glad you did this for her and love the connection to the butterflies. I wish Nikki and her family the best.
Gorgeous!
Amazing! Where is the beautiful light from? Or did i details it in the post?
That was from World Market (not available anymore)
Looks amazing! I keep clicking on the link for the curtains etc and it keeps just bringing me back to the original post. Any tips? I’m super curious about the long curtain rod as we need a really long one for a similar window. Thank you so much!
Sorry!! I fixed it! It is this post- https://nestingwithgrace.com/amazon-favorites-curtain-rod-curtain-panels-bed-and-more/
So kind of you to do this for a new friend in need of a pick me up. Looks great.
