Laundry Room- Shelf over Washer and Dryer and an Ironing Board in the Wall

We have a nook for a washer and dryer in the hall connected to our primary bedroom. Ideally it would be nice to have a washer and dryer in our closet, or a large laundry room on the main floor. But this little laundry nook works great, we can quickly start a load of laundry from one of the most central places in our home. After doing laundry for seven years, all the way in the dark unfinished basement, in our Connecticut home, I knew a washer and dryer in convenient spots was priority over extra closet space or anything else. When we remodeled we made sure to add a washer and dryer on each level of our home.

I have made a couple changes to this laundry nook, but this week we finally added the thing I have wanted all along. A laundry shelf, or ledge for function, but also creating a space to place a curtain rod to hide our washer and dryer when the door is left open, which is all the time!
My brother asked, why don’t you just close the door. Well, we try, but also I want it to look nice when I walk by it. I LOVE the coziness the curtain added to this laundry nook. We used the same curtains that we have throughout our home, you can get all the info HERE.
We used a simple black curtain rod, with these rod brackets that attach to the wall and rings. Biggest tip is to make sure your ledge is high enough so you can slide your washer and dryer out if needed.
We did paint the cabinet, and ledge so it was close to the same color as the curtains. The paint color is Intrigue from Benjamin Moore, we use Benjamin Moore Advance, Interior Waterborne Alkyd in Semi-Gloss.

DIY Ledge-

We used this 1’x3′ Oak Board for the front of the ledge, and this 1’x12′ Oak Board for the top (we had Home Depot cut the wood to exact size we needed, they offer this service free). Just glued, then clamped them together, making sure to wipe off excess glue. Then filled in the gap between the two board with Plastic Wood. After the plastic wood dried, we sanded it until it was smooth. Then installed it under the cabinets, while making sure the ledge was straight, we screwed in a long screw under the ledge up into the cabinets.
Love the end result and how functional the ledge is, and how nice the curtains look and how it connects to the rest of the vibe of our bedroom!

I found this Ironing Board Wall Unit with the ironing board included. It fits the space like a glove. We installed it between the studs and made sure there was a plug close by to easily plug in the iron. I love that the iron fits right inside!
No more searching for a place to store the ironing board, and iron. Also no excuse to not quickly iron our clothes! The girls have one by their washer and dryer, in our upstairs laundry nook, and use it often.
This is a peek inside the cabinet! My favorite organizing item in them is this acrylic lazy susan, it can hold a lot but I can just spin to find what I need, like dryer balls and lint rollers. Different compartments to keep items in place. We also have these see-through bins so I can clearly see what’s inside (forces us to stay organized, ha!) and then just easy to pull down.
